Many may claim to be great communicators, but do they actually understand what makes the practice of communications truly awesome?
While I fell into communications in college, I learned over time I truly love it. My happy place is cracking the code for what, when and how to share information in a way that meet the audience wherever they are. When done well communications can help people to understand the world around them and to know why certain events are happening.
My approach to communications is about people-based conversation that is predictable.
People Based
Information must resonate with the audiences who receive it. To accomplish this it’s important to get to know the people who are receiving your information. When I work at an organization I do this by carefully choosing the interactions I have with my colleagues.
Conversational Curiosity
Communication is meant to be two-way, back-and-forth, and maybe even include a little healthy debate. I encourage those I work with to really lean into having conversations from a place of curiosity where you listen, ask questions and learn from those around you.
Predictable
When embarking on a new initiative or setting up your communications cadence, it’s important your audience knows when to expect information arrive and where to find it. While I don’t encourage communicating for communications sake, I do advocate for employees and others to know when to expect to learn more.
